16th March 2020

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic all league matches and club nights have been suspended. It's not known yet how or when the league will resume, but we'll keep club members updated with developments as they happen.

27th September 2019

Cabot Chess Club have now moved venue to the Colesseum pub, all home matches in the 2019/20 season will now take place there. Also there will be club nights at the Colesseum pub every Wednesday from 7:30 onwards which everyone is welcome to come along to.

April 2019

Cabot chess club finished runners up in the Bristol and District Minor Cup. The final with South Bristol was a close match, with Cabot eventually losing 4-2. It all came down to the final board, where Alan Papier had a straight forward draw, however that would have meant a 3-3 loss on board count so rightly pushed for a win. After several years away from the minor cup it was an excellent performance by everyone involved.

2nd January 2019

Bristol Cabot have reached the semi final of the minor cup. Cabot beat Downend on board difference after a hard fought 3-3 draw. Keynsham at home awaits in the semi final on the 18th February.

3rd September 2017

The new season is upon us and the website has been updated with the latest fixtures. Home matches will be played on Wednesdays at the Rope Walk pub following our removal from the Hare. The fixtures can be found on the Season 17/18 tab on the website and can also be downloaded at the bottom of that page. Following a host of new signing in the summer and teams in Division 2 and 3 it promises to be an exciting season. Will the B team get any points in Division 3? Will Neil be able to avoid time trouble? Will wedding plans distract Alex? Will Dave read magazines in winning positions and go on to lose? Will Alastair D be able to actually win a game at the Rope Walk?

24th August 2017

It was a good summer for Cabot players this year, as 3 players were victorious in local tournaments. Alastair Marston won five and drew one of his six matches in the Graeme Thomson Memorial Rapid Play to claim the title in the major section. This was followed by Alex Rossiter storming to victory in the Gambit night tournament Open section against some of the best players Bristol has to offer. To top the summer off Tim Jones saw off a strong and experienced field of players to win the major section of the South Bristol Rapid play with 4.5 out of 6. The 4th round of that tournament even had 2 Cabot players leading the field and facing off against each other, with overall winner Tim Jones defeating Alastair Drummond who went on to finish on 3.5, a personal best performance in rapid play.

17th May 2017

Cabot A finished the league season in style with an excellent victory over Clifton C. Dave McGeeney followed up his fantastic Frome victory by winning in only 6 moves. Alex Rossiter and Alastair Drummond also won to complete a 4-2 victory over Clifton C, and Cabot A finished the season 3rd in Division 3 for the 4th season running.

17th May 2017

Two players from Cabot took place in this years Frome chess congress, both in the intermediate section. Dave McGeeney had a fantastic tournament, winning the U140 section with 4.5 out of 5. He also won the Roy Hossell trophy as the highest place Somerset player, a remarkable performance considering his grade of 126. Dave was doubtlessly very relieved he didn't have to face higher graded club mate Alastair Drummond who, after a shaky start, won his last two matches to finish with 2.5.

There is a new calendar in the Season 2015-16 section of the website which shows the dates of upcoming matches, and local tournaments which may be of interest to players.

31st March 2016

Cabot A acheived their 7th win of the season on Thursday night, beating South Bristol C 4.5 to 1.5. There were rumours before the match that due to a lack of transportation, Cabot's Alastair Marston may be forced to cycle to the venue. However this did not materalise, and he went on to win on board 4. Victories for  Alex Rositer and Alastair Drummond, combined with draws for Neil Derrick, Dave McGeeney and Phil Burnett meant Cabot A took all 2 points back to the Colloseum, by car.

29th March 2016

Cabot B claimed their 6th straight victory beating Clevedon 2.5 to 1.5 on Tuesday night. Brian Crewe gave Clevedon the lead by winning on board 1 with a fine queenside mating attack. Sandor Nagy got his first win of the season on board 4 to equalise, before Phil Burnett won a closely fought match on board 3 to give Cabot the lead. Mike Roberts sealed the win for Cabot B with a draw on 2. The result means Cabot B are now second in Division 4.

23rd March 2016

Cabot B won in spectacular fashion away from home against a strong Keynsham team. Despite being out graded on the majority of boards, Alastair Drummond, Mike Roberts, Phil Burnett and Alan Tanner all won in an impressive 4-0 victory. When informed of the final result via text after the match Mike Roberts had this to say: "nice win :-)".

Cabot Chess Club had 4 players competing in the Bristol Spring Congress at the end of February. Richard Collis finished joint 7th in a highly competetive under 125 section with 3 out of 5. Dave Mcgeeney had a great tournament winning 4 matches and finishing 2nd in the U125.

Cabot B followed up a good away win at Harambee last week with another win against Bath University at the Colosseum. Victories for Phil Burnett on board 3 and Alastair Drummond on board 1, combined with a default point on board 4, gave Cabot B a 3-1 win.

11th December 2015

Cabot B drew 2-2 with Downend E last Tuesday in a closely fought contest. Despite traffic congestion in central Bristol, all the players from both teams managed to make it to the colosseum. Jason Rice was victorious on board 3 continuing an impressive first season, and Luke Bray won on his debut on board 4.

The Bristol Winter Congress took place on the 27th to 29th of November. Three players from Cabot took part and all had good tournaments finishing higher than their seeding. 20th seed Alan Tanner finished joint 8th in the minor scoring 2.5/5. 8th seed Alastair Drummond was 3rd in the minor with 3.5/5 winning a share of the prize fund. The stand out performance was from Alastair Marston, who not only won the grading prize in the major with 3.5/5, but also finished joint 2nd - a stunning acheivement for the 25th seed.

Cabot Chess Club's Christmas Party is next Saturday the 12th December. The party starts at 6pm at the Colosseum which will be followed by a meal out.

Cabot A won a closely contested match against Hanham B in Division 3 by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Wins for Alex Rossiter, Dave McGeeney and Alastair Drummond, plus a draw for Neil Derrick on board 2, gave Cabot the narrow win, giving the A team 8 points from their opeing 5 matches.

8th September 2015

Cabot B got their first win of the season on Tuesday night, winning 3-1 away to Horfield D. Philip Burnett won on his return to action on Board 3 with a clever checkmate in the endgame. Richard Collis won in his first match of the season on board 2, and Alastair Drummond won a close fought and bizarre game on board  1 on time.  Cabot B now have a bit of break until their next fixtures on the 29th September. In the meantime Cabot A will kick off their season on the 22nd with an away match against Hanham A.

1st September 2015

Cabot B started the new season with a 2-2 home draw against a strong Keynsham team. Jason Rice made his debut for the club, giving experienced campaigner David Woodruff a tough match on board 3. Pavel  Kustra continued his 100% start to his Cabot career by winning on board 2 and Alastair Drummond won a close battle on board 1 that went right done to the wire with both players finishing with less than 5 minutes on their clock.

20th August 2015

Cabot had 3 representatives at the British Chess Championship this year. Congratulations to Alex Rossiter who claimed victory in the U180 section of the British Championship. Starting as 11th seed, Alex finished with a score of 4 out of 5 to take the title. Alastair Drummond acheived 4th in the U120 section and Dave Mcgeeney gave a much needed boost to Coventry's drink's industry.

21st April 2015

Cabot B finished their season with a 3-1 home victory over Horfield D. On board 3 new signing Pavel Kustra made it two wins from his first two matches. Alastair Drummond and Alan Tanner also won to give Cabot 3 game points with Lee Abecasis winning on board 1 for Horfield. The result guarantees Cabot B a top 5 finish in the Bristol and District League Division 4 in a sparkling first season, with 24 points from their 17 games. Rumours that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich plans to buy the B team are unfounded.

21st April 2015

Cabot had two representatives in the Bristol Spring Congress minor section. Congratulations to Dave McGeeney and Alastair Drummond who both grabbed a share of first place with 3.5/5. Six players lead with 3/4 going into the final round. In a gripping finale there were three draws on the top three boards, which resulted in a remarkable eight way tie for first place.

Wins for Neil, Mike and Richard, coupled with draws for both Alastair's gave Cabot A a 4-2 victory over Hanham A. Cabot remain in 2nd place in Division 3 with two matches to go.

20th March 2015

Cabot A won 5-1 last Tuesday against fellow promotion candidates Hanham A. There were victories for Alex Rossiter, Alastair Marston, MIke Roberts, Richard Collis and Dave McGeeney. Neil Derrick was the only casualty, losing to Tim Chinnick on board 2. Whilst Keynsham A look nailed on to win Division 3, the result leaves the race for the second promotion spot wide open.

3rd March 2015

Cabot's A team continued their good run of form with a 6-0 victory over Clifton E which included wins for Alex Rossiter, Neil Derrick, Alastair Marston, Dave McGeeney, Alastair Drummond and Richard Collis. The victory keeps Cabot A in the hunt for promotion from Division 3.
